It’s Monday, and we’re all getting back into the swing of our internships after a restorative weekend. We have long commutes, deadlines, difficult kids, sometimes difficult co-workers, and summer heat– but no complaints here! We love what we do. Take a look at how my co-workers are lifting up their hands and feet, their hearts and minds:
DAY 23: Maria Dora Berruti (Price of Life Intern; Studying Fine Arts at Hofstra University; Awesome Imitator of LumpySpacePrincess)
“Then thinking we would take in downtown and experience SoHo, God changed our plans. Caleb, Margret, Anahi and I stumbled upon a girl named Loreal Madonna. She was sitting on the sidewalk, throwing out compliments in exchange for some change. Little did she know the change in store for her. We quickly invited her to eat with us, even though we were stuffed from dinner. The Lord was putting it on my heart to give this girl a banquet. As we sat down at the Cozy Diner, Loreal unpacked her heavy story.” (“Wow, NYCUP. What a week.” With Everything)
DAY 18: Jacob Stebly (Operation Exodus Intern; Studying Applied Music at Eastman School of Music; Author of Hamlet– the children’s version)
“Monday the funniest thing happened. I was on my way back to the convent and one of the little boys I work with stopped me on the way out and said:
‘Will I see you tomorrow?’
‘Of course,’ I said, ‘I am here for a month!’
‘I wish I had daughters,’ He added. I just froze….how do you respond to that?
‘Maybe…some day?’
‘Maybe tomorrow I will bring three or four.’ At this point I had no idea what he was talking about until I realized he was saying dollars, but with a speech impediment! It was the most hilarious thing! I wish I could have seen the look on my face.’” (“Hola, Rubio!” Beautiful Feet)
DAY 24: Mackenzie Yee (Price of Life Intern; Studies PPL in Binghamton University; Loves Star Wars– R2D2!!!)
“Some practical ideas that I haven’t quite thought through all the way yet:
3. Clothing. Most of the clothing we wear has involved some form of slave labor. How can I protest this without spending extravagant amounts of money on clothing? Thrift shopping.
6. Spread awareness. But, as with spreading the gospel, do so with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15). It’s not my job to judge anyone, but simply to share what I’ve been learning about the world and what God has to say about it.” (“Learn to do right,” Unveiled Faces)
DAY 12: Hannah Monroe (LoGOFF Intern; Studying Urban Studies at Trinity University; Expert Mincer of Garlic)
“In the past week and a half, the LoGOFF team has been reading through various books of the Bible to look at the biblical basis for consuming local, green, organic, fair trade, and slave free goods. I’ve never gone through any book of the Bible to see what it says about something so specific. So far we’ve gone through Deuteronomy, Leviticus, and Isaiah and now we’re working on the Gospels, Revelation, and Genesis 1-3. I haven’t read the Bible like this since I took New Testament my freshman year in college. It provides a different pace contrary to the typical inductive Bible studies I do.” (“Fourth, Food, and Firehydrants,” (Drinking Living Water)
DAY 17-23: Caleb Evington (Love Kitchen Intern; Studying Communications/Advertising at Appalachian State University; Eeep! Will-be-moving-here!)
“As soon as she walked in she ran towards the both of us with the biggest smile I have ever seen, hugged us, and started to burst out into tears because she realized that there were people in the world that do care about her dreams and believe in her aspirations. She was so over joyed by Adri’s kind gesture that she talked and talked for a long time about all of her struggles but also all of her thankfulness to GOD because she knows that HE has HIS hand on her life. So much so that she had not been in for a week because she had gotten a job at a restaurant. It wasn’t all that she wanted but it’s enough to begin to pay off the bills and give her time to start writing her book.” (“NYCUP SIP DAYS #17-23,” Isaiah 1:17 Mission)
DAY 24: Rachel Beise (Capture NYCUP: Photography Intern; Studying at Southeast Missouri State University; Lived ten years in France– She’s fluent!)
“Most of last week and this week has been all about finding and editing the 37-ish photos that are going to be part of the Hope Fair on the 14th. It doesn’t seem like that would be a big deal, but for a perfectionist like me, sending in 37 of my photos and saying they are good enough is really hard! But I have lots of amazing people around me who are willing to help me get over being hard on myself and I can feel that it’s time to learn to have grace for myself. I guess as long as we’re living we will be students in something” (“Jul 9,” See, Create, Repeat).
Don’t let the Monday-Fridays get you down, but in everything, lift up the work of your hands and your relationships with your coworkers to the Lord who redeems everything for better.
God bless <3
