Freedom On The Fourth

Happy Independence Day, folks! Here at NYCUP, we interns have the day off to enjoy friends and fireworks– but we didn’t want to go without giving you guys a little idea of how Jesus is working for freedom in our lives.

DAY 14: Elizabeth Payne (LoGOFF Intern; Communications Major at James Madison University; My name is E-Payne– Y’know, like T-PAIN)

“But now, I feel myself rising out of “the pit” and the veil is being lifted. I feel my spirits rising. I know God was still good in those times. God didn’t leave me when I was in the pit. In fact, we grew closer. It is those times of struggle and times of stretching that I cry out to God more and we have a closer relationship.” (“Friday, June 29, 2012,” (Seek Justice: Isaiah 1:17)

DAY 12: Hannah Monroe (LoGOFF Intern; Studying Urban Studies at Trinity University; llama-llama-not-a-llama)

“The LoGOFF team discovered that the city doesn’t actually pick up most of the recycling they say they do (like plastic, paper, and aluminum). Instead, they only recycle cardboard here and we need to find a place to drop off the rest of the recycling so it doesn’t get thrown out with everything else. Honestly, that was a bit disappointing.” (“Released into the cyber-abyss,” Drinking Living Water).

DAY 17: Melissa Pan (Nomi Network Intern; Studying Plan II and Corporate Communication at the University of Texas at Austin; My last name means BREAD)

“so we did the only thing we could, as girls with flats and too-small feet for his (yes, even mine har har). we ran to the project house, found one of the only six guys on the project, and he graciously handed over his nike converses. we ran back to the subway stop, frantically looking for him and praying that the subway hadn’t left yet or that he didn’t leave. lo and behold, he was still there! but the shoes were too small. however, he still wanted to keep them and thanked us. he wasn’t very willing to talk further, saying that he was on his way to brooklyn to meet someone. the moment we stepped off the subway car, the doors closed and it left for downtown.” (“the aroma of Christ,” Melitoast)

DAY 17: Rachel Beise (Capture NYCUP Intern; Studies Commercial Photography at Southeast Missouri State University; Photographer by day, masseuse by night)

“On Saturday, I got to walk around China Town at night and take photos of the night life there. China Town is known to be a hub for prostitution and human trafficking. It was crazy how dark it felt just walking around. I got some good images but the most powerful thing for me was just to be in that environment and to get so close to what we are fighting. It was hard but good.” (“Jul 2,” See, Create, Repeat)

DAY 15: Jonathan Yee (Capture NYCUP Intern; Studied English at Binghamton University; HUHUHUHUHUHUHU)

“I continue to encounter this backwards Kingdom. And God invites me into it. By exchanging my thoughts, my desires, my success, my failure, my definition of “enough,” for his eternal peace, joy, patience, righteousness and love. Thank you God for giving me everything.” (“The Backwards Kingdom,” Soul Healing)
